For my 100th review had to do an Austin classic, this spot has been around in one way or another since Austin was REALLY weird in the 70s. It’s an Austin institution that’s survived a lot of change but may not make it past 35 expansion which isn’t gonna do anything for traffic.Anyway, it’s a real locals spot which ya won’t find in top Austin musts, but it does it’s job as a local diner. It’s a 24 hour authentic diner in a town that caters to the hip and new. It’s not a modern chic diner, but it does have cool art and a good atmosphere. If you’ve been on a road trip and stopped in a small town diner, or have a spot back home where you’re from that really only people from the town know about then you’re picturing this place accurately.Stars Cafe is okay with accepting its identity. It’s a place to grab some munchies when you’ve been out on the town or partying and it’s a good spot for some coffee and surprisingly good breakfast tacos before work starts.Everyone at my table enjoyed their order. The Tex-Mex omelette was pretty dang good in my opinion. The mimosa was 2$ and despite none of the plates looking particularly amazing all the food was the bomb dot com. It had us full, didn’t cost an arm and a leg, and was a good spot for the friends to socialize and catch up. It doesn’t pretend to be bougie, it’s just a local diner and that’s what it wants to be. It’s not amazing in the grand scale of Austin eating and if it was going for that I wouldn’t give it 5 stars. But it’s just being stars cafe, the place you stopped by when you were drunk DT or needed a place with coffee to study at that’s 24/7. It met all my expectations EXCEPT for the side of sweet potato fries, that’s not a lot of fries for a side, but besides that the omelette were good, the hash-browns surprisingly tasty and everyone else enjoyed their food and the impromptu mimosa (for 2$ we had to get one). We’ll all be back here sometime. If you’re looking for a fine dining experience this isn’t your spot, but if ya want some good grub, that’s reasonably priced with cool/friendly employees, and an old school Austin vibe, the “weird” that everyone originally moved to Austin for, then you’re in the right spot!

I have been coming here ever since I moved to San Antonio. Yep, it’s that good. I always have fun when I come here no matter what the time. Early morning or late night, there is always something to see here. Good food and good company. It’s an easy on and off exit and I’ve never had a bad meal or experience. The Eye Opener is a great breakfast for a great price. The carafes of mimosas top it all off!

5 stars for the SERVICE and our Server , also the Chef/Breakfast meals. Coffee was way to acidic. Only negative was the “odor” at the entrance to this “eclectic and artsy “ local hole in the wall. If you’re adventurous…and forgiving…and get lucky enough to get our server…it’ll also be a 90% positive experience for you 😜😜😜😜
